I left the detail off the original question since I felt people would 
quickly jump to "how can we enable such things" and wouldn't answer the 
original question, which is: "is there anything worth the effort?"

I dunno, emulating SPI in asm doesn't sound like too much work.

On your second point, I would make it a requirement that each othhr mode 
would have something unique that could be checked right after the mode 
switch.
