The 40wire PATA cable does not seperate each signal by a ground wire. 
The 16 data signals are all on wires next to each other. That's why the 
cable had to be short and 16MB/sec was the maximum you could get out of 
it. That was fixed with the 80wire cables. Still using a 40pin plug though.
