binary diff command

I'm sure this topic has come up before, but I don't recall the outcome -
is there any way under Unix to do a binary compare of two files? Something
like diff but operating on arbitrary binary files rather than text.

Alternatively, some way of converting binaries into ascii hex files would
be useful because then they could simply be sent to the regular unix
diff. Perhaps it could even insert carriage return characters after every
16 or 32 bytes for clarity.
