Is there an online source listing of the 1541 DOS where I can examine the
routine that translates filetype number into 3 text bytes (and 2 symbols)?
What I'd like to do is create a new filetype and make the drive include it
in directory listings.

Perhaps I am reinventing the wheel here - how did the 1581 do
subdirectories?
