There is one more - specifically German - aspect to this: Daimler-Benz used to place the letter “D” in their car model’s names (after the - more or less - engine’s cubic capacity designator) for variants equipped with compression-ignition engines.. ;-) Those were thought as economical yet heavy,  far from agility and fun :-)

Although the original “128D” already bore resemblance to DB cars naming scheme, it was only (at least I never heard it before) after the “metal" version hit the shelves that this “Blech Diesel” (also written as “blech diesel” (maybe only due to author’s errors/laziness or maybe due to particular disrespect - here I am not an expert on German language) became popular nickname for the machine.
