Hmm, after reading your email - I just built a fresh VICE (2.4.4) 
extract from trunk with no problems (Ubuntu 12.10/amd64)

mkdir vice;
cd vice;
svn checkout 
https://vice-emu.svn.sourceforge.net/svnroot/vice-emu/trunk/vice .;
./autogen.sh;
./configure --enable-sdlui;
make;
