It's not a special circuit or a mod... it's more that there is no circuit
there at all to do it for you.  You don't just tell the drive to step up
or step down like the CBM, you manipulate the magnetic field coils a
certain way to move the drive head (push-pull electromagnets) purely in
software on the Apple.  Because of this, you have very free movement
withing track boundaries.
