When it is not an asterisk but something else that is still valid for pattern matching (drive # specification, colon, single-char wildcard) the "most recent file" code in the DOS is _NOT_ triggered. And if it is followed by the asterisk - the first file from directory is selected for access.

Just that's what both Spiro and Ingo (both being known for knowing well what they talk about) have already made sizable efforts to explain in good details.
