Unfortunately, it autoloads a file in the floppy drive, not in the
computer.

This autoboot-feature is there for the 1540 drive and early 1541 drives
(the ROMs -01, -02 and -03) had this autoboot routine. Even the 2031
drive had it.

The routine is at $E77F (in the 1540 and 1541 drives), IIRC.

However, this feature was removed with the -05 ROMs of the 1541; later
drives like the 1541C, 1541-II, 1570 and 1571 do not have it, either.

Exactly. That's why the file ":*" or "0:*" (which specifies exactly the
same) is a better choice: This is always the first file.
