Hm, can't you load a file using Kernal routines and then jumpstart it
without relying on BASIC?

I would set up filename, logic file number and load it. Then I would use JSR
$A659; JMP $A7AE (actual addresses might be wrong, I take them from memory)
to set up pointers and restart execution, if your program has a BASIC stub.

Not sure if it will be more compact than your routine, but it might make it
easier than having to wedge it in somewhere in the middle of Basic starting
up.
