There is an email address and a phone number in the WHOIS, so maybe someone would try to contact him. It might be that he forgot to renew it, perhaps is on vacation or something and didn't realize the domain is expiring. Or something wrong might have happened to him (hopefully not). Sometimes domain registrars allow also for someone else to renew a domain. I did this once for a domain registered with MyDomain, when I was using my friend's domain for my website, and he forgot to renew it.
