I didn't because it behaved the same without it. I only placed that call there trying to find a remedy. Anyway, I was curious because I could not find explanation for this test code to fail so mysteriously but in the program I don't use this code anyway.

Probably the original question should be rephrased in this case into something like: can something influence the state of registers / serial lines over time even if IRQs on both sides are disabled?
