I hope you don't mind me not being Gerrit :)

IMO: They wanted to provide +5V and 9VAC anyway. But parts needed to
provide all the needed current for the +5V became too expensive. So they
split it up: a part provided by the trafo and one part generated on the
board self.
Later boards with the CMOS ICs didn't need that much current and only
needed the +5V part from the trafo.

Just my two cents but I'm looking forward for a better explanation.
