I've finally analyzed the schematics on the kim1 tape interface and checked the code in rom.
Apparently the LM311 + LM565 are just used to convert the 2 frequencies received by 1 or 0.

I can probably do that with an avr tiny and less glue components. 
(and less cost 2€ for a ATTINY13-20PU,  LM311 0.25€  LM565 3€)

I'm not using the original kim-1  but the new kim-1 made by Vince Briel.
on the new kim-1 the tape interface is not wired. (he is planning to build an extension later).

I was thinking to rebuild the analogic part, so I was trying to understand the schematics.  (Page 31 Kim manual) if I understand in the "great lines" I dont totally understand the purpose of each component.
