Not everyone can program a PAL and I prefer normal TTL were possible 
since it allows everyone to rebuild the circuit, even in a few years 
when PALs or GALs might not be easily available anymore or programmers 
are hard to come by.

Reminds me of the people who, upon seeing the ZX spectrum rebuild with 
standard TTL, asked 'Why not use a CPLD?'. They really missed the point 
of the whole project.

Sometimes you have to use programmable logic since the circuit would 
become too large otherwise. But a handfull of standard TTLs does not 
qualify as 'too large'.
