Commodore 16 mini-DIN ports - why?

Hello!

Since I have just bought a C116 with some games, a question popped in my
mind that perhaps Bil would be able to answer. What was the rationale to
change the joystick and tape ports to mini-DIN in the 264 machines? Was
it to save space on the small backplanes (especially the C116 is tiny)?
Or some other reason?

Regards,
Michau.
