I once bought a book for starters that handled Altera CPLDs. Being quite
big and not needing it for the moment, I scanned it. I can put the PDF
on my site. Another idea just google for 'ebook' and 'fpga' or 'cpld'.
Lots of finds I promise you!

The problem is not the tool but the 5V versions are very hard to find :(
When using 3.3V (or lower) types, you'll need special buffers. And these
buffers are hardly (or not ???) available in DIL form, only SMD or
