*sigh* you really underestimate the practical implications. the user will have 
to know that serial number, how? from the sheet of paper that he will throw 
away during unpacking? and what will happen if that happens, the hardware 
becomes completely useless ?

seriously, unless the *entire process* is completely automated (as seen with 
current gameconsoles, for example), then it will be a maintenance nightmare. 
and the users will hate it too.

skills? When a piece of software gets listed as a job skill, it has moved from 
the solution side to the problem side of the ledger. Lotus is really a job
