External powersupply for the 1541-II, different drive mechanics, different ROM (one 23128 instead of 2 x 2364). Some fast loaders that use the serial cable will not work reliably with the original ROMs of the 1541. If you have the choice, get the 1541-II, it runs a lot cooler due to the external power supply. Any 1541 used in Europe should be reworked for 240V input voltage. The internal regulators will not get as hot as with the transformer wired for 220V.
