I have a 8296-D but it's complete and I would hate the idea of cannibalizing
it just for the case. The chips for the mainboard wouldn't be the problem, but
then I'm in a similar situation than several years ago: I kept the 710 without
the keyboard and power supply for years until I decided that I need the space
for something else. As soon as I gave it away, I got a keyboard (without a 7x0
attached :-), and even some time later I got a pack with power supplies. Some
of them were used as replacements for 5x0 machines.

It's ridiculous. I've owned and worked with several 6x0 machines since more
than 25 years, but never a working 7x0.

BTW: Do the US B256s have the same switching power supplies like the P500?
I've seen two of these power supplies. One was already dead when I got it, the
second one broke down after a few weeks of use. Either they're bad quality or
they don't cope very well when switched to 240V. My other machines had linear
power supplies which generate more heat, but I've never seen one go bust.
