Well, any proportional font will effectively break your ASCII art but I am 
sure you already knew that. That means right now when I read your mail in 
Outlook Express, it looks like one big mess, at best a character set that 
had way too much alcohol last night. On the other hand in any application 
with a fixed width font, it will look superb.

What is it good for, to produce ASCII banners for print? To include in your 
machine code programs, where you replace 0 by 1, space by 0, and : by a % to 
get some kind of binary representation?
