Peter, Bill,

I just won a 64C (with graphics on the front of the keys) for $34.48 which includes shipping. I feel kind of lucky. It's coming from Georgia so I should have it by the end of the week. I'll let you guys know how it goes.

Thanks again for all the help.

The newer machines have some incompatibilities and annoyances compared to the
old. The best NTSC machine to get is a breadbox with a 1984 board and R7 or R8
VIC-II chip, in my opinion. Some C64C's have this board, though. The ones with
the PETSCII characters on the front of the keys instead of the top are more
likely to have the older board.

These newer boards have a low power VIC-II which have more prominent vertical
banding and defects with changing screen/border color registers (it causes stray
pixels to show up). The newer SID has different filters and a "feature" removed
that is used for digitized music and voices in some games.
