Hallo Ethan,

What is the problem of emulating REL files as well, including Super Side Sectors? When I started with my CBM-HD project I had no idea at all hoe Side Sectors worked and didn't use them at all. When needing record n, I started with record 1, read the link to next sector and went so on until I found the sector containing record n. And as a PC is much much faster then a floppy drive, timing was no problem. Later I had to add Side Sectors because I started to use D64 images.

You, Hervé and me makes three already :)

But to have a good start, my first question is: has anybody the source codes of the 90x0 available? I already disassembled the ROMs but code W/O comment is hard to understand if one has no idea what is going on. I wished I just knew how the SASI part worked!

As said before, one can make a device that replaces the middle board + MFM drive. Anything with a CPU/microcontroler can do. I myself had in mind to use my 1541IDE project for this purpose. I can use the 6522 pins, formerly used to control the floppy drive, to connect with the SASI interface of the 90x0.

One step further would be hacking the EPROMs to be able to use the full potential of a modern harddisk/CF-card.

I myself would even go a step further by replacing the "slow" 6522 directly with the IDE interface.
Hmmm, what about a SD-card interface? Isn't this just a matter of bit-banging? Slow but very simple: one can use the SASI interface and just a change of EPROM needed.

But what ever choice is made, one has to know how at least the SASI protocol works. And thus we need the sources IMHO. And if there aren't any available, we have to produce them ourselfs.
