My first thought is also - keep it simple and start with 1541. This
may actually happen to be done and we may have something useful as a
result. If we start forking and over-engineering at this stage then
possibly no version will ever materialise. OTOH once the 1541's
version gets worked upon - there is nothing preventing us from
optimising / adapting and the entry barrier will be much lower.
