I sketched out an idea for this, along the same lines. On powerup, the
CLKin and DATAin are tied via a 74LS240 or something to CLKout and
DATAout. Each are also tied directly to the appropriate serial ports on
the user port.
The only problem I had was in breaking the connection. you need to
ensure you break the connection while the lines are at rest. Breaking
during a transmission would cause a lot of problems.
