I posted my question about my problem with my 1581 (seemingly random error #74 (drive not ready), fixed by ejecting and reinserting the disk) on lemon64.com, and someone just responded to my question saying that the problem could be that the switch that senses if there is a disk inserted in the drive might be dirty. And THAT reminded me of another thing I noticed about this drive that I had completely forgotton about! I noticed that with this drive, I can write to a disk when the write-protect switch is open! Could these two issues be related?
