I prefer not to wire directly to my very expensive laptop parallel 
port.  While it is possible, I would never recommend such a risky move 
to someone, as if they fry their port, they'll come yelling for me. 

So, a 74LS245, perfboard, DB25, 2 2x5 headers, 2 2x5 female ribbon cable 
plugs, and a bit of 10 conductor ribbon cable looks to run ~ USD$5.00.  
Still mighty cheap, in my opinion.
