So how did 5.25" drives distinguish between HD and DD?

I could have sworn, that the 5.25" HD disks hat an additional notch on 
the "bottom" end... (And looks like I'm not the only one -- see "General 
Questions" on http://www.ucalgary.ca/infoserve/Vol2.2/microlab.html)
