An 8inch disk can be written to when it is NOT notched. Cutting the notch write-protects the disk. Two things you could try. First chean the head with an alcohol soaked rag. And second, try inserting the disks up-side down. (you just might have gotten hold of some of those disks that are only coated on one side, kind of rare though).
