One comment on the "What´s a 6509 anyway".
The RAM banks 1-4 were for the 6x0 and 7x0 models. 
The 5x0 models (P500, with the VIC) had their own 
VIC-II video memory in bank 0, with the usual VIC-II
video access stuff (there is extra video memory for character
display - at the same place where the 6x0 and 7x0 have their
2k video memory for 80 cols the 5x0 have 1k video and 1k 
color RAM - but for hires it was possible to switch to 
RAM bank 0 for the VIC-II.)

Probably the use of banks 1-4 in the 6x0 and 7x0 models is
a reminder of their common development.
