I guess the reason why they changed it was that this is
ASCII and they didn't want to be standard compliant. <g>

I defined a new keyboard scan routine and matrix for my C64 BBS
so that I could write ASCII in RUN-mode and PETSCII in DIRECT-mode.
I even had shift+cbm turn the screen off/on. A crude screen
saver and machine speedup trick, you see.
